MPP Mitchell Announces $25,300 OTF Grant
July 23, 2010 - Goderich, ON – The Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron is ramping up its public awareness campaign thanks to a recently awarded Ontario Trillium Foundation grant. Carol Mitchell, MPP for Huron-Bruce, celebrated the $25,300 grant today with OTF representative Muriel Murphy and proud members of the organization.
“I’m happy to be bringing the great news of this grant to the Women’s Shelter of Huron,” said Carol Mitchell, MPP for Huron-Bruce. “With assistance from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, they will be able to offer a series of events, designed to provide information and education about the important and all too common issue of domestic violence within our communities, and to let women know about accessible resources.”
With the funds from the grant, Huron Women’s Shelter will host three events; a Past President’s Luncheon, an Open House for Municipal Leaders, and a Theatrical Performance in conjunction with the Blyth Festival Theatre. The Past President’s Luncheon will be held on October 16, 2010; they will invite all past Board Members and the general public to Holmesville Township Hall. Canadian literary icons have also been invited as guests and past presidents and staff members will be honoured.
In November all of the newly elected municipal politicians will be invited to tour the organization’s four buildings and become better acquainted with its services. The spring of 2011 will be the time frame for a theatrical production in conjunction with the Blyth Festival Theatre. Organizers are working with Eric Coates in this joint venture aimed at increasing awareness of woman abuse through a dramatic production.
“Huron Women’s Shelter is thrilled to have been approved for this grant, which will allow us to honour and celebrate our 25 years of service to the women and children of the County of Huron,” said Michele Hansen, Executive Director of Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron. “The grant will also allow us to increase awareness of the issue of woman abuse and its effect on children while promoting the services we provide to ameliorate those effects. We are grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for supporting the work that we do in Huron County to keep women and children safe. ”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant will also allow the agency to up-date its current promotional materials; posters, banners, and pamphlets. It is critical that EVERYONE in the community know about the services available and contact information. Not everyone will experience abuse, but everyone will know of a friend, a neighbour or a family member who is experiencing abuse. It is through referral from trusted friends that women find Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron. For this reason, the organization’s promotional materials are invaluable.
