MPP Mitchell Announces $12,000 OTF Grant
February 11, 2010 - Goderich, ON – Today, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 109 in Goderich hosted Carol Mitchell, MPP for Huron-Bruce, to share some wonderful news with the local community. Thanks to a recently awarded $12,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), the Legion will able to make important improvements to their community facility.
MPP Mitchell was joined by OTF representative Muriel Murphy as they presented a plaque from the Foundation to proud members of the Goderich Legion.
“These renovations to the Goderich Legion are a part our government’s ongoing commitment to build and sustain the economies of Ontario’s small and rural communities,” said MPP Carol Mitchell. “These washroom upgrades will allow the local Legion to become fully accessible and ensure that it will continue to be a destination for the community for years to come.”
The Goderich Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has been in existence since 1926 and continues to play a necessary and appreciated human and social services role in the community. A variety of activities are offered at the facility, including: bingo, which attracts 110 participants weekly; social events; dinners for veterans; various youth programs; seniors card parties; pipe band practices; and more. The Goderich Legion also provides support for various educational bursaries, scholarships and youth sports clubs.
“Branch 109 is truly appreciative of the grant that we have received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This will enable us to continue to serve our Veterans and community in an even more efficient manner,” said June Pyette, President of the Goderich Legion. “It will help us continue to serve our community as a strong and viable entity. We thank all those who assisted us with this project.”
