Carol Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
In August 2002 Carol Mitchell won the nomination over
four other candidates to become the representative for the
Huron-Bruce Liberal Party. The following year she was elected as
Member of Provincial Parliament. Carol was re-elected to Provincial
Parliament for her second term on October 10th, 2007.
Minister Mitchell was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs in January 2010. Prior to that, Premier McGuinty
appointed Carol as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of
Agriculture and Food in October of 2003. In March 2006, she was
appointed Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Public
Infrastructure Renewal. Upon re-election in the fall of 2007, Carol
was named the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal
Affairs and Housing, with a concentration on Municipal Affairs. Carol
was also elected as the new Chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus in
December 2007. In September 2009, Carol was named Parliamentary
Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care. Minister
Mitchell has sat on many committees during her time at Queens Park
including the Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee, the Results Table
Committee for the Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Health and Social
Services Policy Committee, and the Standing Committees on Social
Policy, Government Agencies, Finance and Economic Affairs and General
Government. She was also an inaugural member of the Rural and
Northern Health Panel.
In 1999, she was elected Warden of
Huron County. The next year she was re-elected Warden and became the
first Warden to be elected to two consecutive terms in over one
hundred years.
Prior to that, she was a member of Clinton’s
town council. After serving one term she moved up to the position of
reeve and became a member of Huron County Council. In the first
election of the newly amalgamated municipality of Central Huron,
which included Clinton and the Township of Goderich and Hullet, Carol
was elected reeve.
Minister Mitchell was born in Clinton and
raised Goderich Township located in the heart of Huron County. She
attended Central Huron Secondary School then completed her studies at
Fanshawe College in London.
Upon graduation from college, she
worked in retailing. She started her own business and opened stores
in Clinton and Bayfield, specializing in children’s clothing. She ran
her own business for 10 years.
Minister Mitchell is married to
Larry Mitchell. They reside in Clinton and have two daughters,
Gabrielle, and Jasmine
