MPP Mitchell Presents OTF Plaque
Teeswater – Knowing where you have come from is just as important as
knowing where you are going – a statement that the Teeswater-Culross
History Book Committee whole heartedly embraces. On Friday afternoon,
they took another major step towards their goal of ensuring that local
history is preserved and accessible to all members of the committee as
MPP Carol Mitchell joined them to announce some good news. Thanks to a
$15,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the committee will
be able to compile and publish a second volume, documenting the history
of Teeswater-Culross from 1980 to present.
Carol Mitchell, MPP Huron-Bruce said, “ To know our history is to
understand our community,” and she continued by saying, “ by reading our
community’s history we often find out how the community dealt with the
challenges in the past. “
The first history book that the group produced only covered up to 1980.
With the help of the grant from the Foundation, the committee will be
able to produce a in-depth history of the physical, geographical, human,
social and governmental development of Culross Township and the Village
of Teeswater, cover from 1980 on. Items of interest that will be
included in the new volume are the 2008 Ontario International Plowing
Match (held in the outskirts of Teeswater), the 2008 Teeswater Fall Fair
and the 2009 Teeswater-Culross Homecoming. This book will help
individuals increase their knowledge of the communities’ heritage and
the valuable contributions from diverse cultures and populations.
The Teeswater-Culross History Book Committee, led by
the Teeswater Lions Club, is comprised of 11 community residents
representing at least 8 agencies/groups. Their role is to research and
collect information and organize the book into a final publisher-ready
format. Their first history book only covered up to 1980 and included
biographies submitted by 300 families and records of ownership for all
public and private properties. For more information on the project,
please contact Ronald Hill at 392-6414.
