Hard work, not luck, involved as community groups join forces to renovate the Lucknow Community Centre - Nov. 23, 2007

MPP Mitchell Announces $50,000 OTF Grant

Lucknow – “Many hands make light work,” could well be the slogan used to describe the Ad hoc Committee to Renovate the Lucknow Community Centre. Lead by the Lions Club of Lucknow, the Lucknow Kinsmen, the Lucknow Agricultural Society, and the Lucknow Community Centre Board have come together to make sure the Lucknow Community Centre continues to be a gathering place for local residents. Their hard work has just been recognized with a $50,000 grant to help them ensure the Lucknow Community Centre is fully accessible and energy efficient from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. MPP Carol Mitchell was joined by OTF representative Joe Steffler to present a plaque to committee members in celebration of their accomplishment.

Carol Mitchell, MPP Huron-Bruce said,” This project shows again how rural communities work together to serve their citizens.”

With the help of the grant, the committee will be able to upgrade and renovate the Lucknow Community Centre by replacing the exterior doors, the 30 year old heating/air conditioning unit and install automatic door openers. Not only will this ensure that the facility is accessible to all members of the community, but ensure that the centre is energy efficient. OTF funds will also be used to complete kitchen renovations by installing an automatic dishwasher and water softener to improve efficiency and health standards.

Recently the Township of Huron-Kinloss identified the Community Centre as the community evacuation centre. The Centre needs to become more accessible in compliance with the new regulation of the Disabilities Act and have a reliable heating and cooling system.

Allan Gibson of the Renovation Committee said, “By replacing the main doors two problems were solved. Accessibility was difficult and the doors were a major source of heat loss. The new doors can be opened automatically and are more energy efficient.”

The Lucknow Community Centre is a “community centre” in the truest sense of the words. Built 30 years ago through a partnership between the Lucknow Lions Club, Lucknow Kinsmen, and the Lucknow Agricultural Society, these groups continue to operate the facility as part of the Lucknow Community Centre Board. A broad range of functions are held at this location since it can cater to large groups with a capacity of over 500 people. It is well-used by residents from both Huron and Bruce Counties. For more information on the centre, please contact Allan at 528-2203.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For 25 years, the Foundation has supported the growth and vitality of communities across the province. OTF continues to strengthen the capacity of the volunteer sector through investments in community-based initiatives. For more information, please visit www.trilliumfoundation.org.
