McGuinty Government investment benefits Maitland Trail Association through Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Grant - August 16, 2007

Maitland Trail Made Safer Thanks to GPS Technology

GODERICH - Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was at the Goderich Beach Station of the Maitland Trail on Thursday, August 16, to announce a $9,400 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant by the McGuinty Government to help publish an updated trail guide with topography that includes access points and special features detailed through Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping.

This data can be picked up by GPS units (Global Positioning System) and used in case of emergency by Emergency Response Teams to locate trail entry points and other access points along the 48 km Maitland Trail and adjoining 14 km Goderich to Auburn Rail Trail (GART). This affordable, user-friendly guidebook will increase awareness, promote increased trail usage and increase physical activity for all ages.

“This is wonderful news for the users of the Maitland Trail,” said MPP Mitchell. “Preserving the institutions that help define our communities is a very important part of respecting the past while looking towards the future”

The OTF grant will be used to hire a part-time writer to create trail maps with the GIS information.

"The grant allows Maitland Trail the opportunity to update our guide book with the addition of coloured topographical maps, G I S data, and 911 numbers," said MTA Chairperson Marg Bushell. "This guide, with foldout maps, will also have accompanying descriptive text including physical and cultural points of interest along the trail and it will provide both MTA members and tourists an improved and enhanced guide to the Maitland trail, & Goderich to Auburn Rail Trail (G.A.R.T.)
