Bayfield Croquet Club Celebrates First Steps Towards A New Facility

BAYFIELD – Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was at the Bayfield International Crocquet Club on Thursday, August 16, to announce a $13,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant by the McGuinty Government for purchase and installation of an irrigation system that will support the conversion of a former gravel pit into courts for international croquet.

“This is wonderful news for the residents of Bayfield and its surrounding areas,” said MPP Mitchell. “Preserving the institutions that help define our communities is a very important part of respecting the past while looking towards the future”

The club is developing a totally new facility costing over $90,000, and the OTF grant will assist with the installation of the irrigation system and well pump which will allow them to properly maintain and get full season use of the three courts they will have for international croquet.

The new location, right in the town of Bayfield, will make this outdoor activity much more available for local permanent residents and the large number of summer residents and tourists to the area. The volunteers involved are very committed to this project and are offering very large financial and time commitments to its development.

This grant plays a key role in allowing us to start seeding the ground in order to have a playing field for the spring season,” said Secretary Treasurer Norman Brown.

“It’s a critical grant for the future of our club and we are helping beautify our community, by turning this gravel pit to beautiful spot our community can enjoy.”

This international croquet club, with over 60 members, has existed in Bayfield for over thirty years. They offer eight tournaments per year, daily non-tournament playing and run various other social, recreational and fundraising events. Members range in age from 40 to 80, with youth participation as a target for future building now that they will have facilities within walking distance for most families living in the town.
