McGuinty Government investment benefits Township of North Huron through Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Grant - August 15, 2007

North Huron Museum Accessible to All Community Members Thanks to an OTF Grant

WINGHAM – Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was at the North Huron Museum on Wednesday, August 15, to announce a $14,400 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant by the McGuinty Government for help make the museum accessible to all residents of the community.

“This is wonderful news for the residents of Wingham and its surrounding areas,” said MPP Mitchell. “Preserving the institutions that help define our communities is a very important part of respecting the past while looking towards the future”

Awarded in March, the grant will help North Huron to build an accessibility ramp making the Museum’s first floor fully accessible to all residents of the community.

This project will help to further build the capacity of this museum to attract new participants and increase income potential with the ability to accommodate seniors from local seniors homes and bus tour groups.

The ramp is the first stage in making the building accessible. The next stage is the installation of an elevator which will reach all four floors making the second floor galleries and the Barn Dance Museum in the basement accessible to the public. Community support for this project includes $10,000 contribution from the Old Boys’ and Girls’ Reunion in 2004 and commitment from the Township of North Huron to cover costs of capital improvements to the building’s interior.

“This historical building is a significant landmark in North Huron and now with the assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation it will now be accessible to all North Huron residents and visitors to our community” says North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent.

The North Huron Museum, formerly known as the Wingham Museum, has a mandate to collect, interpret and display North Huron artifacts for residents to learn their own past and for the wider public to learn about the history of this area. The museum currently employs 25 volunteers, 1 full-time and 1 part-time staff.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For 25 years, it has supported the growth and vitality of communities across the province. OTF continues to strengthen the capacity of the volunteer sector through investments in community-based initiatives. For more information, please visit www.trilliumfoundation.org.
