Township to Make a Splash Thanks to Newly Awarded OTF Grant
WINGHAM – Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was at the Gorrie Community
Pool on Wednesday, August 15, to announce a $42,500 Ontario Trillium
Foundation grant by the McGuinty Government. This grant, along with the
help of the Howick Optimist Club and other donations, have supplemented
the dollars committed by the Township of Howick Council to repair and
upgrade the pool to better serve all residents of the community.
“This is wonderful news for the residents of Gorrie and Howick
Township,” said MPP Mitchell. “Preserving the institutions that help
define our communities is a very important part of respecting the past
while looking towards the future”
The Howick Optimist Club approached the Township of Howick Council to
suggest the much needed renovations could be a joint project between the
Club and the Council. The grant will help Howick Township to build new
walls and floor, new accessible doorways, and accessible washroom
partitions for the deck house and to replace the existing pool deck in
order to make the facility safe and accessible. These repairs were
seriously needed and were part of total upgrades to the facility
totaling approximately $130,000, with further contributions from the
municipality and the local Optimist Club.
“This project will go a long way in helping us achieve the goal of
having healthy, involved, fit and active citizens, “ announced Reeve Max
Demaray. “ Our new accessible facility will make sure that all children
and swimmers can use our pool. Every one is welcome here.”
Since its construction in 1974, the pool, located at 2046 James St. in
Gorrie, has cooled down children and those young at heart during many
hot summer days. It has provided summer employment for local young
people wishing to teach invaluable swimming and lifesaving lessons to
children. The Corporation of the Township of Howick is appreciative of
the commitment of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and their support as
they strive to build a clean, accessible facility, for everyone’s
enjoyment.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of
