Union Training School Funding Approved - August 7, 2007

Tiverton - Carol Mitchell today announced that the Bruce Technology Skills Training Centre has received $788,000 from the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities to upgrade the facility located near Tiverton, Ontario.

"Locally available post secondary school education and training is a critical ingredient for vibrant communities," Mitchell said. "I've made it one of my key priorities. This money will build greater capacity in the Kincardine area for the delivery of community college level technician level training and that is a good thing for everyone involved."

Bruce Technology Skills Training Centre is owned by the Power Workers' Union. The Union's President Don MacKinnon applauded the funding. "The PWU is deeply concerned about the shortage of skilled trades and being able to increase our delivery capability at this facility means we are better positioned to meet that need."

Duncan Hawthorne, President and CEO of Bruce Power, welcomed the additional training capability at the facility, which is located near the Bruce site. "As the largest recipient of training from this facility and a supporter of its creation, Bruce Power supports increased capability being available as we continue to grow our business and recruit new employees."

The Bruce Technology Skills Training Centre currently offers training for Ontario's nuclear industry for employees requiring apprenticeship and operator training. Working with several community colleges, the facility expects to host technician level diploma courses starting in September 2008. Employer sponsors to support the facility's ongoing operations are currently being sought.
