MPP Mitchell Lauds Support For Marine Industry
GODERICH – Carol Mitchell, MPP Huron Bruce was joined by Hon. Donna
Cansfield, Minister of Transportation at the Marine Heritage Museum to
celebrate the McGuinty Government’s investments in essential upgrades to
Georgian College’s Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre in
Owen Sound.
The McGuinty Government recently invested $3.0 million dollars to help
purchase state-of-the-art visual navigation simulators, upgrade existing
engineering equipment and improve distance-learning capabilities. The
centre was established in 1969 and is the only accredited marine
training institution in Ontario. It provides training for a variety of
careers, including deck officers, engine room officers and shore-based
jobs such as marine superintendents.
“It is appropriate that we are here at the Marine Heritage Museum to
talk about this important investment. The Marine industry has an
intimate connection to the economy and history of this area,” said
Mitchell. “This is important to the local economy which relies on the
marine industry to move goods in and out as well as providing jobs and
training close to home for young people.”
“Ontario and Canada need well-trained graduates to navigate and operate
our ships,” said Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Chris
Bentley. “Today’s investment creates opportunity for students interested
in marine careers while securing the future viability of Ontario’s
marine industry.”
Minister Cansfield pointed out the importance of the industry to the
province. “This industry has been ignored for far too long, “said
Cansfield. "A sustainable transportation system is one that maximizes
all modes of transportation and investing in the marine industry means
we can continue to train the qualified professionals that are necessary
to ensuring marine is part of our multi-modal strategy"
