Funding Provided Through One-Time Connecting Link Grants
GODERICH — The McGuinty government has invested more than $751,000 to
support families and businesses in Goderich, Transportation Minister
Donna Cansfield announced today.
“Our government understands how important it is to support rural and
northern communities,” said Cansfield. “This investment helps
communities — such as Goderich — respond to local challenges and
improves the quality of life for people living and working in Goderich.”
In addition to the funding provided to Goderich, the McGuinty government
has also invested more than $158,000 to support families and businesses
in Saugeen Shores and more than $36,000 to support families and
businesses in Central Huron through one-time Connecting Link grants.
“This is great news for the communities of Goderich, Saugeen Shores and
Central Huron,” added Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell. “This investment
helps maintain a strong community and a better quality of life for the
residents of these communities.”
Through this year’s provincial budget, the Ontario government provided
52 municipalities with one-time Connecting Link grants totalling $25
million that may be used for municipal roads. Funding was distributed
based on Connecting Link proposals submitted by municipalities.
A Connecting Link is a municipal road that connects two ends of a
provincial highway through an urban municipality. In 2006-07, the
Ontario government invested $14.2 million to fund 37 construction
projects on local roads that connect to provincial highways.
“Our government recognizes that local residents — especially in rural
and northern areas — need safe and reliable infrastructure,” noted
Cansfield. “The McGuinty government is moving Ontario forward by making
investments that will improve safety, create jobs and encourage economic
growth.”
Since 2003, the McGuinty government has committed $6.3 billion in
highways, roads and bridges and invested $4.9 billion in public transit,
including over $1.8 billion in GO Transit.
