Province moves one step closer to an enhanced facility for the Walkerton Clean Water Centre - Apr. 27, 2007

WALKERTON - The Walkerton Clean Water Centre, an agency of the Ontario Government, is announcing a new project that will better serve drinking water system owners and operators across the province.

“Water system operators play an important role in making sure the water we drink is safe,” said MPP for Huron-Bruce Carol Mitchell. “Our government is committed to implementing all of Justice O’Connor’s Walkerton Report recommendations and the Centre’s work will continue to support and complement our efforts to ensure that Ontario residents can rely on a safe drinking water supply.”

Through enhanced accommodations, the Walkerton Clean Water Centre will be better able to fulfill its mandate to make training available and accessible to owners and operators of Ontario’s drinking water systems, especially those serving rural and remote communities, and to provide a hands-on learning experience through a leading-edge technology demonstration centre for the water industry.

“The new facility will provide additional training capability to drinking water system operators, and professionals in the drinking water industry,” said Murray Elston, Chair, Board of Directors, Walkerton Clean Water Centre.

The Ministry of the Environment will be working closely with the Ontario Realty Corporation who will oversee an open and competitive process as this project unfolds.

“This is exciting news for Walkerton and community,” said Municipality of Brockton Mayor Charlie Bagnato. “With the diligent and continued support of the Ontario Minister of the Environment Laurel Broten, we continue to move forward to our ultimate goal; a world class facility that will ensure safe, clean drinking water for all of Ontario.”

The Government of Ontario established the Walkerton Clean Water Centre in October 2004 to help the government take practical actions to ensure safe water for all Ontarians and as part of the government’s commitment to implement the recommendations of Justice O’Connor following the Walkerton Inquiry. The Centre’s goal is to become renowned for its knowledge-based, innovative approach to training.
