McGuinty Government makes large investment in hydro transmission - Mar. 26, 2007

Kincardine

The McGuinty Government is investing more than $600 million to construct a new double circuit 500 kilovolt line on a widened existing transmission corridor between the Bruce Power Generating facility and Hydro One’s switching station in Milton, ON. This will be the largest transmission investment in transmission in over 20 years.

The news followed an announcement by Ontario Power Authority confirming this as their preferred route for Ontario’s newest clean energy corridor. It will facilitate the transmission of clean energy from the Bruce Power site and the many potential wind energy sites in the Huron Bruce area. By moving forward with this project we are taking a major step in addressing the orange zone constraints that are affecting Renewable Standard Offer Contract projects in our area.

“This is very good news” said Carol Mitchell M.P.P. for Huron – Bruce “the upgrades to the transmission infrastructure and the new transmission line from Bruce to Milton will do much to relieve the congestion on the grid in this area”. “It will do much to get base load power from Bruce Power as well as clean wind energy out of the area and onto the grid”. This will handle approximately 3000 megawatts in total of new energy. The new line should be completed by 2011.
