Online Marriage and Death Certificates in 15 days, Guaranteed - Feb. 01, 2007

Whether celebrating the joy of a marriage or dealing with the loss of a loved one, Ontarians don’t want to spend a lot of time filling out government forms and waiting for them to arrive. These are times to be spent with family, and we’re trying to make it easier to do that.

By building on the success of the online birth certificate program, our government is expanding the number of online services that come with a 15-day money back guarantee by adding marriage and death certificates to the list. It is the latest online option that’s making it easier for Ontarians to access important government services easily, quickly and efficiently.

To be eligible for the service guarantee, the marriage or death must already be registered with the Office of the Registrar General. Applications must be accurate and complete and submitted online at www.ServiceOntario.ca.  If an application is eligible for the guarantee and the certificate is not mailed within 15 business days, clients can apply for a refund.

Marriage certificates and death certificates prove an event took place in Ontario and may be needed to access insurance, health benefits and pensions. Death certificates are often needed to settle estates.

People have told us they want more convenient, timely and consistent service, and we’re on their side. I am proud that the McGuinty government was the first in North America to offer a money back guarantee for online birth certificate applications, and this builds on the incredible success of that service – more than 99.7per cent have been delivered on time.

As you may know, marriage and death certificate applications have been available online since July 2006. They are safe and secure, using technology similar to online banking. In addition, clients can still submit applications by mail or in person, but these take more time to process.
